Natural Mom:Back to School

snack-bagsSo it’s not exactly back to school for us. It’s more like first day of school! Claire will start kindergarden in 16 days (but whose counting). I find myself with all the usual problems of many mothers at this time of year, gathering supplies for the upcoming school year. But in our effort to reduce our use of plastics, the school lunch (or packing a lunch at any time) often poses a problem. I have often used the natural waxed paper bags for packing sandwiches, but there is no way to close them (even tape does not really work),so I was limited in how I could use them. Especially with a curious toddler boy in the house, but if I could just find a way to close them. I was just about to give in to the Ziplocs, when I had an idea…

I never actually found a way to close them, but I did devise a plan with my mother to create these reusable snack bags. We purchased about two yards of acrylic coated cotton fabric, some velcro from Walmart, and gave it a shot. We made a few samples out of muslin to make sure we could get a sandwich in the bags. Then made as many sandwich sized bags as we could, with the remaining material we made what ever size bags we could. I think I have 4-5 different sizes and a total of about 18 bags! I use the wax paper bags as liners and they are working wonderfully. I really don’t need 18,but we just kept on going until the materials ran out. I think this is one of my favorite inventions yet! Thanks mom!

I also stumbled upon a great website for school supplies (thanks to my best friend Jill). It’s called Discount School Supply (so simple). I think this could be very helpful for home schooling,Sunday school classes,or birthday parties. There are so many art and learning supplies at very reasonable cost. Also, there is always free shipping for orders over $79,so find a friend and order together! I have placed a link below (Note:I will receive a small commission from sales using my link). I hope you find it as great as I do,if not, please send me a link to any site you think better and we’ll post it!
