Home Sewn:Valentines Bags

Since Claire got her sewing machine for Christmas, she has wanted to make things all the time. So  we decided she could make goodie bags for her class instead of cards for Valentine’s Day. Since she was home sick this weekend,we got started. I washed and cut the pieces (6×20 inch) of white muslin;folded down the top and bottom edges 2 inches;and marked a seam line with fabric pencil. The tops and bottom seams are about 1.5 inches from the fold. I folded the fabric in half and marked the size seams at one inch from the edge. These lines provided guidance for Claire to sew on.

At first we used her sewing machine (with Jessica’s help),but it only has one thread and is very temperamental. It took us over an hour to complete one. (Thank you for your patience,Jessica.) So we decided she could use my machine after that and things went much faster!

After she finished all the stitching,we turned them inside out and she drew on them with fabric markers. She used heart shaped cookie cutter to stencil a heart and then colored them in. We placed a heavy paper in the pouch during this,so the pens would not bleed through. After she decorated them,we threaded the ribbon through. I think they turned out great! What do you think?

I think I am going to do the same thing, but much larger bags out of unbleached muslin to use for produce and bulk items at the markets. I am so tired of using so many plastic bags, but sometimes you just need to use a bag!

4 down and 16 to go!
